Invitation to: SIMBS Land Manager Conference 2002
Dear ________________????????
Have you been experiencing rogue or illegal trail building in the land area you manage? Are mountain bikers creating their own riding trails and building "stunts" without permission? Do you have urban trails that are experiencing user conflicts?
"THE INTEGRATION OF MOUNTAIN BIKING INTO TRAIL SYSTEMS".
WHEN:??Thursday June 13, 2002
WHERE:??CRD Parks Headquarters, 490 Atkins Road
SIMBS is hosting this conference with workshops, brainstorming sessions and open discussions with south island land managers and owners to share constructive ways of planning for and managing the increase in mountain biking. Plan to and learn about well planned, appropriate and sustainable multi-use trails while minimizing conflicts with other trail users.
WHY WE ARE HOLDING THE CONFERENCE
The increase in mountain biking has lead to several issues we wish to discuss:
- a large numbers of riders concentrated in limited areas.
- the lack of off road riding opportunities close to neighborhood centers.
- the difficulty youth have accessing authorized trails without a car.
These conditions create pressures that result in other problems:
- user conflict.
- increased riding on unauthorized trails, as well as urban public areas.
- unauthorized trail building including unauthorized "stunt" building.
- unplanned growth of trail systems and associated environmental problems.
- Unmonitored, unsustainable and substandard trials.
We would like to share with you:
- Our knowledge of planning, building, and maintaining sustainable trails.
- Our experience with a successful partnership with the CRD Parks
On Sept 24, 2001 SIMBS held a land managers meeting to start the process of dialogue with land managers and owners. The minutes of that meeting are enclosed for your convenience. We will be expanding on this important dialog with the participation of a much broader group of land managers.
Please register as soon as possible by completing this e-mail form, mailing it in, or phoning Gordon MacQuiggan 595-4173. The survey questions on the registration form will help us plan the conference and meet everyone's needs.
Yours truly,
Lorien Arnold, President, SIMBS
