Cheakamus Challenge Update (courtesy of Wild Willies)

Saturday, September 20th
10 a.m. start at Squamish Airport.

The race is on! The King of the Classic's, an annual Celebration of Pain, is in the Big Ring and ready to go! The 20th Edition of the Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic Mountain Bike Race is going to be an EPIC EVENT.

Contingency Date
In regards to the back-country closures there will be a ban until the 14th of Sept. and if we still haven't received enough precipitation we will then run the race on September 27th which we have set as a contingency date. Currently we are at around 200 pre-reg with an expected 400-500 more entrants expected in the next 3.5 weeks.

Course Info
The course is actually longer than last year with the addition of TRASH to the mix. The total distance looks to be just over 72 kms with 2075 metres of climbing. There will be enough POWERADE and water on course at 2 locations, Brandywine Falls and Cheakamus Lake Road. There will be POWERBARS and GELS at the Cheakamus Lake Aid Station only!

There will be NO PARKING OR STOPPING along the Godfrey s Lookout section. Anyone who does will be ticketed and towed. This is a VERY HAZARDOUS AREA and with the addition of the Brandywine aid station there is no need to be here. If you do wish to view here you must park 1 km. away and walk.

Please respect the marshals and the barricades as it was a lot of work to get this set-up and this is a crucial spot in the course. As most of you already know there is heavy construction going on near this section of the highway and there is NO WORK BEING DONE on Saturday but we must obey the rules.

Start Area

- The start area must only have parking on one side of Government Road. Please obey marshals and keep the doors closed and stay off the road with all of the race preparations that you must make. The sign on is at Airport and it is an easy walk or ride. Sign on begins at 7:30 a.m and ends at 9:30 a.m.

- There are plenty of washrooms in the start area so please use them.

- As you are all aware there is a huge fire hazard right now, please use your heads and exercise extreme caution.

Transportation

- there will be buses going down from Whistler in the morning that are meeting at 7:30 a.m. at the Brewhouse located near Municipal Hall on Blackcomb Way.

- there will be a bus going back to Squamish at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Enough for 100 and you must pre-register on the web at www.cheakamuschallenge.ca

THE "20 - 20 - 20 " RULE
The International Mountain Biking Association says: "20 hours of trail work, $20 to IMBA, and $20 to your local MTB organization." SIMBS membership is only $20, but IMBA's is US$ so it balances out.
